WHEN Maestro Sam Wong told New Year's Eve guests at the Halekulani to sing along to Symphony selections from "Sound of Music," little Jany Cataldo came alive and sang in a big voice that surprised and startled guests. Her English accent -- she was raised in the English hill country -- would have won approval from Julie Andrews. Jany, who designs and sells pearl jewelry by appointment and at Hutton's on Maui, was pumped up because several women at her table were wearing her pearly creations. Jany's wahine pals at the table included Carole Brooks, Uli Cutter, Barbara de Greef and Rosie Alvaro ...

Annie Lai steps out at 103

ANNIE LAI attended a 52nd birthday dinner for her grandson, Danford Look, at Neiman Marcus' Mariposa Thursday. Not too surprising, except that Annie is 103 years old. Up until she was 101, she went to Las Vegas three times a year and played the slots eight hours a day. Her late son, Wally Lai, founded Mid-Pac Lumber Co. Attending Thursday's party were Annie's daughters, Doris Look, Pearl Chang and Millie Wong, all Roosevelt grads. Annie's granddaughter, Rita Wong, also attended ... Leland Nakakura of Southern Wine & Spirits has a new boat and took Mariposa G.M. David Nagaishi and David's boys, Randy and Kimo, out fishing recently. The Nagaishis brought Leland luck, as the boat's first marlin was caught ...

TOM HANKS and Meg Ryan have another hit romantic comedy in "You've Got Mail." Lauren Shuler Donner produced the picture. She was a celebrity server for kids at Don Ho's Island Grill Dec. 24. Asked how she managed to land Hanks, who is so very hot, and Ryan, who is also hot and very cute, Donner said: "We had a great script. Tom read it and liked it. He called Meg and she liked it." So with the two stars and a solid script, a hit was assured ...

CATHY OSTREM'S hula class performed at the home of Barbie Benton and George Gradow recently. Cathy is a Coldwell Banker Realtor who studied under Maiki Aiu. Dancers included Barbie, Cathy's mother-in-law, Kai Ostrem, and Stephanie Reynolds, Kelly Conmey, Elizabeth Knoke, Renee Hampton, Jenifer Bossert, Kathy Rueter, Eleanor Chow Otake, Myra Kaneshiro Brandt, Gloria Affigne, Lianna Horovitz and Connie Dei Santi. Chef Strehl leaving Prince

GARY STREHL, top chef at the Waikiki Prince since it opened 10 years ago, departs Thursday for Colorado. Strehl, one of Honolulu's leading chefs, has bought into the South Park Cafe, a 60-seat restaurant in Telluride, a skiing area. "My wife, Mary, will manage the front," Gary said ...
