Temple Emanu-El welcomes Neil Newman as its cantor-in-residence. Newman comes from Beth El Synagogue in Minneapolis and is a graduate of Temple University, Gratz Hebrew College and Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. Visiting cantor
to teach, performDuring Newman's stay as cantor-in-residence, Wednesday-Feb. 9, Newman will co-officiate Shabbat services with Rabbi Avi Magid, work with teachers in the School of Jewish Studies, teach a class in Torah cantillation and present a concert with Beebe Freitas. All events are free, except for the Jan. 15 event. Here is his schedule:

Buddhist Study Center, 1436 University Ave.: "Living and Dying in Buddhist Cultures," 7 p.m. Jan. 19. The discussion is Part 3 of a four-part forum titled "Buddhism and Social Action." The last discussion will be held next month. Free. For information, call Jaime at 524-9588.
Calvary Chapel, 1190 Nuuanu Ave.: Potluck and baptism, 12:30-4 p.m. tomorrow, Kapiolani Park, between Waikiki Shell and the bandstand. People with last names beginning with A-L bring a main dish (meat); M-Z, bring a side dish (salad, pasta, veggies, fruit, etc.). Also bring a blanket, mat or beach chair and own beverages.
