Star-BulletinCastle christened its new $4.3 million gym last night, but it was Kalaheo that did the celebrating.
The Mustangs improved to 2-0 with their 56th consecutive Oahu Interscholastic Association victory, a 59-38 win over the host Knights (1-1).
For nearly 30 years, Castle has played most of its "home" basketball games several miles away at King Intermediate.
"It's a nice gym, but we're still trying to get used to the idea of one being on campus," said Castle coach Rocky Fraticelli. "We're still adjusting to things like having our own locker rooms."
Last night, the Knights didn't make their defensive adjustment soon enough on Mustang guard Levon Freeman. Freeman hit all four of his 3-pointers -- and 14 of his 16 points -- during the first half to help Kalaheo take control at intermission, 28-17.
"He scored 12 on 3-pointers and we were down by 11 at half," said Fraticelli. "Basically, he was the difference. We drilled in practice to key on two players, Freeman and (Julien) Sensley. It's hard to stop both their inside and outside game."
Castle contained Freeman after halftime but had no answer for Sensley. The junior forward, held to one basket in each of the first two quarters, scored 17 points in the second half to finish with a game-high 21.
The Knights pulled to within 47-35 with 4:34 left but could get no closer as the Mustangs closed out the game with a 12-3 run. Sensley had five points and four of his 20 rebounds during the final minutes.
Dayton Aberilla's 3-pointer accounted for Castle's only scoring in the last four minutes. He finished with a team-high 12 points, all in the second half.
"Castle does a nice job on defense," said Kalaheo coach Pete Smith, whose OIA win streak dates back to 1992. "We couldn't get a rhythm going.
"Levon got off in the first half. Then Julien, who has the ability to take over a game, was just himself in the second half."
