of Hawaii babies

Star-Bulletin

Tapa

Dr. William H. Wilkinson, 86, of Waialua, who practiced medicine in Hawaii for 59 years and delivered more than 5,000 Hawaii babies, died Monday in Wahiawa Hospital.

He said in the Hawaii Medical Service Association's Island Scene magazine that when he was in the first grade he wanted to be a medical doctor. He graduated from Stanford Medical School in 1939 and spent his residency at Stanford Hospital.

Arriving in Hawaii May 1, 1940, he first practiced at Ewa Plantation, then moved to Lanai in 1941, where he stayed until 1952. Since then he had practiced in Wahiawa.

Never retiring, he worked full time until two weeks before his death.

The internist who cared for him toward the end of his life was a baby Dr. Wilkinson had delivered on Lanai.

He originally went to Lanai to work for Dole Plantation and provide general medical care for plantation workers and their dependents, about 3,000 in all, later joining HMSA as a participating physician in 1946.

After moving back to Oahu, Dr. Wilkinson spent three years on the HMSA medical committee.

Born in Los Angeles, he is survived by sons Dr. Robert W., William D., John P., Gerald P. and Paul J.; daughters Nancy H. Wilkinson, Victoria W. Clemens and Julie W. Foster; sisters Dorothy Wilson and Christinia Lee; brother Owen; 12 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will take place at 7 p.m. Friday at Mililani Downtown Mortuary, 20 S. Kukui St. The family requests aloha attire.

There will be a scattering of ashes at 1 p.m. Sunday in front of the family's beach house at 68-339 Crozier Drive in Waialua, which Dr. Wilkinson purchased for his children 47 years ago In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Rotary International Foundation.
