In the bag

First there were Beanie Babies, then there was Furby. Now Booklines Hawaii has come up with a local version of the plush toys.

Hawaiian Collectibles is a series of four cuddly creatures -- 'Io Kio the gecko, Nui Loa the humpback whale, 'Aukai the green sea turtle and Heheo the racoon butterfly fish.

Each of the Collectibles in this first series are numbered and comes with a Hawaii passport, birthdate and history. They are about $6 each, available at Borders stores, Hilo Hattie's, Island Provision Co., Duty Free Shoppers and other gift shops.

They're selling quickly, so if you have trouble getting one, call Booklines customer service at 676-0116 ext. 206.

Booklines plans to release a second series of Hawaiian Collectibles in February.

Kinesys sunscreen and body care products are designed with the humid climate in mind.

Many sunscreens, lotions and other topical solutions are oily to the touch, clog pores or break down in sweat. Kinesys Pharmaceutical Inc. designs products specifically for active individuals.

Available in Hawaii at pro shops, sporting boutiques and some drug stores are Kinesys' oil-free sunscreens, muscle balm, shampoo, body wash and other products. The products have been widely used by the UH Athletics Department and Kinesys sponsors local power lifters Anthony Harris and Tony Leito.

British Columbia-based Kinesys has a Hawaii in office in Kaneohe. For more information, call 235-3679.

High-tech rehydration

Cytomax, the official drink of the Honolulu Marathon, is available in Hawaii at 7-Eleven stores.

It is designed to boost performance during workouts, reduce muscle soreness and speed recuperation. The active ingredient in this sports beverage is alpha-L polylactate, which has been shown to increase the body's ability to buffer acid by 40 percent.

Cytomax previously had been availble to athletes only in powdered form. The bottled drink comes in three flavors: orange, tropical fruit and citrus.
