Poomaikelani
Kawananakoa, 71

Poomaikelani Kawananakoa, 71, descendant of Hawaii's alii and a leader in Honolulu's publishing and theater fields, died yesterday.

She was the daughter of Abigail Kapiolani Kawananakoa and Andrew A. Lambert; a granddaughter of Prince David Kawananakoa and Abigail Campbell Kawananakoa, and great-granddaughter of James Campbell and Abigail Maipinepine Campbell-Parker.

"My life's deep bond of affection is suddenly severed," said Gladys Ainoa Brandt, a close family friend. "For all of her life, Poomai was a special part of my life. Memories abound. Today I feel sad and empty."

Poomaikelani Kawananakoa founded Hui Hanai, an auxiliary of the Queen Liliuokalani Children's Center, in 1969 to support the center's activities to help children in need.

"Nana I Ke Kumu" was published by Hui Hanai under her leadership.

She also served as president of the Hawaiian Civic Club of Honolulu in the late 1960s.

In 1976, she founded Mana Publishing Co., best known for the publications "Ano Ano: The Seed" and "Princess Kaiulani: The Last Hope of Hawaii's Monarchy."

A theatrical entrepreneur, she formed Angel Inc., which brought to Hawaii such performers as Luciano Pavarotti, The Alvin Ailey Dancers, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Roberta Peters and Four Girls Four group, including Rosemary Clooney and Helen O'Connell.

She recently produced a television special starring singer Shari Lynn.

Survivors include her sister, Marchesa Kapiolani Marignoli; cousin, Abigail Kekaulike Kawananakoa, and nieces and nephews.

Services will be private.
