Edward A. Berlin would have learned this week that he is one of the first five law enforcement officers chosen to be inducted into the Hawaii Joint Police Association's new hall of fame.

Berlin, 75, spent nearly 30 years with the Naval Criminal Investigation Service, retiring as special agent in charge here. He later became director of security with the Navy Exchange at Pearl Harbor.

He died Saturday at his Kahala home.

The organization of federal, state, county and military police will still honor Berlin in December, posthumously, said association President Donald Devaney.

The Pearl Harbor Rotary Club honored Berlin yesterday with a moment of silence, said Rotary district governor Roy King. It's a tradition that will be followed at other Rotary meetings this week for Berlin, who was such an enthusiastic member of the service organization that he attended two or three meetings a week.

Berlin served as the Hawaii district governor in 1986-87 and was a past president of the Waikiki Rotary Club. He was currently chairman of the board of the Hawaii Rotary Youth Foundation.

“He was everybody's counselor and advisor, a source of information and guidance for everyone about Rotary,” King said. “He was a very caring person. He took a great deal of interest in helping other people develop their careers.”

Devaney said: “I always remember him for providing inspiration to young people. He spent a lot of time on the foundation's youth activities. They took a lot of kids down to Kilauea military camp. When he got involved, he got it organized and got the results.

“He was a great humanitarian, he reached out to you,” Devaney said. “He was always a guy you could talk to, and he didn't know how to say no. He was involved in numerous community activities for the good of the state. What I liked was that he was a non political guy, very balanced.”

Berlin was born in Kinney, Minn. He was in the Army when he came to Hawaii during World War II. He became a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve, commanding the Hawaii 40th Special Forces (green berets) detachment in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War.

He was a trustee with the Oddfellows lodge and a supporter of the Hawaiian Humane Society.

Berlin is survived by his wife, Lucille; brother, Lee; sisters Florence and Marce; and nieces and nephews.

Services are at 11 a.m. Saturday at Star of the Sea Church. Friends may call after 10 a.m. The ashes will be scattered at sea. The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Salvation Army or Hawaiian Humane Society.
