Priory a priority
on Wong’s 100th

NTER> HERE'S a hypothetical question not many of us will have to worry about: How would you propose to celebrate your 100th birthday? St. Andrew's Priory alumna Ethel Woo Wong did so by attending chapel. Born Sept. 29, 1898, the centenarian left her family home in Kohala when she was in the sixth grade to attend the Priory. And on her birthday, the Class of 1917 alum was welcomed to the all-school chapel service. The sprightly and sharp lady observed that students today attend chapel just once a week. "In my day," she observed, "Priory girls attended chapel every day and boarders like me attended twice each day, including Saturdays and Sundays." Ethel's father, the Rev. Yee Bew Woo, was the first Chinese clergyman of the Episcopal Church in Hawaii. He served during the reign of Queen Liliuokalani and founded St. Peter's Church on Queen Emma Street and St. Paul's in Kohala. And in another 15 months or so, Ethel will greet the third century in which she's been around...

SHE can often be found in shorts, T-shirt and grease smudges, but on Friday, Keala Simoes will be decked out in Armani. She'll be modeling the dress at the "Evening of Pizzazz" fashion show at the Plaza Club. Her husband, Gerard Simoes of Motor Werkes will likely immerse himself in the wine-tasting, should she decide to buy the dress. Still, it's for a good cause, the Ronald McDonald House. The Bishop St. Exchange Club agreed to help out with the fashion show, but then prospective models John Lyles simply had to go to Europe, Don Machado had to go to the mainland, and Joe Harding had the best excuse -- he broke his ankle, hurt his hip and had to be ambulanced to Castle Hospital twice in 24 hours. Still, the show will go on...

Truth Contest Vaima

Saving Liberty House

FANS at the UH Rainbow game Saturday had to really stretch to come up with something positive in the most recent Bow loss. But one wag suggested that the team is doing its part to keep Liberty House from going under. The financially strapped chain had agreed to donate $300 to the general scholarship fund of UH for each touchdown in a "Touchdowns for Teaching" promotion. To date, UH has scored exactly once at home...

SOMEONE at University Press should have caught the spelling error in the modest memoir written by Maxine Hong Kingston, "Hawai'i One Summer." In listing fellow "Living Treasures" of Hawaii, Kingston ("The Woman Warrior") misspelled Eddie Kamae's name...

THIS has been a pretty heady time for Ledward Kaapana. Just two days after opening for Bob Dylan at Andrews Amphitheater, he was in the recording studio with his idol, Jim Messina (formerly of Loggins and Messina). The resulting instrumental, "The Island," will be released on Windham Hill records. Messina also visited 3660 on the Rise and played guitar with Winston Tan, who performed that night...

What's cooking?

HONOLULU was the 11th stop on the "Cooking Across America" 20-city tour, but the first where the entire line-up of culinary heavyweights -- Mary Sue Millikin & Susan Feniger, Sissy Biggers, Curtis Aikens, Jacques Pepin and Alain Sailhac -- appeared together. A portion of their visit to the Hanohano Room was filmed to air on the Food Network in November. Also, Robin Leach regaled the Perry & Price audience with tales of the "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" and Maureen McGovern did an impromptu rendition of "Our Love is Here to Stay." A veritable feast...
