For the first time, Kahuku High School's football team has moved onto the regional list in Doug Huff's National Prep Football Poll. Red Raiders rated
among best in WestThe Red Raiders, who are 6-0 with preseason wins included, are ranked No. 9 by Huff in the West Region.
St. Louis moved up to No. 6 in the national poll and is No. 3 in the West behind Concord (Calif.) De La Salle and Long Beach (Calif.) Poly.
In the USA Today "Super 25," St. Louis remained at No. 14 in the national rankings and No. 3 in the West. De La Salle and Poly are just ahead of the Crusaders in that ranking, too.
USA Today did not rank Kahuku in national or regional polls.
Hawaii's close loss to Utah didn't faze Duane Wong. Wong went against
Bows ... and wonWong, 28, of Kaneohe, picked 11-point underdog Arkansas State to beat the Rainbows Saturday night, and the Indians didn't disappoint, winning, 20-0.
That correct choice, along with eight others gave Wong a 9-1 record in the Star-Bulletin's Football Fever contest. His was the first entry drawn among those that were equal to or better than the top celebrities on our panel of prognosticators (8-2). As such, Wong is our fourth winner of $500 and four tickets to the Jeep Oahu Bowl Christmas Day.
"I watched Hawaii last week against Utah and they surprised everybody." Wong said. "I knew everybody was going to jump on Hawaii at home. So I went with Arkansas State."
All entries are eligible for the grand prize of an Infinity Sound System home entertainment center, or a trip for two to the Hooters Hula Bowl or two roundtrip tickets to or from the U.S. mainland on Delta Airlines.
BOXING HONOR FOR GUILLERMO: Samson Guillermo of Waianae is the co-winner of the Outstanding USA Boxer award at the III International Junior Olympic Tournament held in July at Tijuana, Mexico. Guillermo and Dumont Welliver were selected by Junior Olympic chairman Sonny Duncan for their outstanding ability in the ring and conduct in and out of the ring.
Guillermo, a 15-year-old Waianae High student, won the 122-pound title at Tijuana, joining Waipahu's Brian Viloria as the only fighters to capture either a national or world Junior Olympic crown.
WAHINE RANKED 51ST: The Hawaii Rainbow Wahine are ranked No. 51 nationally in Basketball News' preseason Top 64 poll.
Defending national champion Tennessee is No. 1. Hawaii's WAC rivals, Colorado State (No. 33) and Rice (No. 47) also were listed.
UH Coach Vince Goo returns eight players, including All-WAC players Raylene Howard, BJ Itoman and Kylie Page, from the team that won the WAC Pacific Division title last season.
KAMELAMELA WAC PLAYER OF WEEK: Outside hitter Justine Kamelamela of UNLV by way of Maryknoll High School in Honolulu was selected yesterday as the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week in the Mountain Division.
Kamelamela, a 6-foot sophomore from Aiea led the Rebels to two victories last week, with 14 kills and only two errors against Utah State and 15 kills and five digs against San Diego State.
Brigham Young outside hitter Helen Hjorth was named the WAC Pacific Division Player of the Week.
UH SAILORS COME UP SHORT: The Hawaii coed sailing team finished second to USC in the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association Sloop Championships at Newport Beach, Calif., last weekend.
The Rainbows missed qualifying for the ICYRA Sloop Nationals.
Sailing for UH were Brent Harrill, Jeff Nelson and Molly O'Bryan.
JUNIOR BOWLING STANDOUTS: Grant Nakaoka and Holly Hoopii have been named the Oahu Junior Bowlers Tour boys' and girls' Bowler of the Year, respectively.
Rookie of the Year honors went to Dawson Kalaikai and Daena DeRego.
SENIOR OLYMPICS: The first Hawaii Senior Olympics will be held Nov. 28-30 in Honolulu as a qualifying event for the National Seniors Sports Classic in Orlando, Fla., next year.
In addition to the many athletic events, there will be a seniors quiz bowl, patterned after the national College Bowl competition.
