At the recent fund-raiser for a political action committee opposed to the ballot measure that could ban same-sex marriages in Hawaii, a group calling itself Freedom Advertising and Promotion of Honolulu passed out an "Our Friends" flier. It identified the few candidates who "are willing to stick their necks out against the efforts to stop same-sex marriage." Same-sex lobby names
friendly candidatesAmong the 12 candidates listed were Democratic state Reps. Ed Case (Manoa) and David Tarnas (Kamuela), and Eve Anderson of Waimanalo, the Republican who is attempting to regain her Windward House seat, but the three did not attend the fund-raiser for Protect Our Constitution. In attendance, however, were state Rep. Roy Takumi (D, Pearl City) and attorney Iris Ikeda Catalani, a Democrat seeking a Windward House seat.
The others named in the "Our Friends" flier were candidates from the Libertarian and Natural Law parties.
On the back of the flier is a statement from Libertarian Tracy Ryan, who runs Freedom Advertising, that same-sex marriages were performed in Hawaii as early as 1976. At issue, Ryan argued, is not whether same-sex marriages should be legalized but whether the state can deny gay couples marriage licenses.
FUTURE VOTERS The families of two state House members, Transportation Chairman Kenneth Hiraki (D, Kakaako) and Minority Whip David Pendleton (R, Kailua), have gotten larger.
On Aug. 29, Hiraki's wife, Robin, gave birth to the couple's first child, Maya Sumie Hiraki, who weighed seven pounds and three ounces.
As is her custom with her Democratic colleagues, Minority Floor Leader Barbara Marumoto (R, Waialae Iki) gave baby Hiraki a stuffed elephant, the GOP mascot.
Pendleton's wife, Board of Education member Noemi Pendleton, gave birth exactly a week ago to Danielle Anastasia Pendleton, who weighed 8 pounds and 1.1 ounces. She is the couple's third child.
