Kailua grinds out
fourth win

Kailua plays a basic brand of football, and will continue to do so until somebody can slow down Rocky Alo.

Kailua remained undefeated at 4-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association White Conference with a routine 30-0 drubbing of Kaiser, relying on Alo to carry the ball 36 times for 196 yards and a touchdown.

"We weren't looking to blow anybody out," Kailua head coach Darren Johnson said. "We just wanted to keep the clock going and get out of here with a win."

Truth Contest Waikele Alo did just that. The White conference's leading rusher ran nine times for 67 yards on the Surfriders' opening drive, and capped it off with a 1-yard touchdown plunge on fourth-and-goal. It was the third time in the drive that Alo would convert on fourth down.

Kaiser went to the air on its opening possession, as Cougar quarterback Jesse Yoshino completed passes on the first four plays until a dropped pass and a suddenly tight Kailua defense forced the Cougars to punt from midfield. Kaiser pinned the Surfriders down on their own 13 yard-line, but Alo would get some help this time.

Kaiser head coach Anthony Gayer watched Alo repeatedly run over the left side of his defensive line on the first possession and began stacking the line of scrimmage with obstacles for Alo to run through.

Surfrider quarterback Chico Cantiberos took advantage of the respect that his teammate commanded from the Kaiser defense. He hooked up with John Keppa on a 20-yard play-action pass to the 9-yard line, and crossed the goal line on a broken-play keeper on the next play. Alo gained 52 yards on the drive and punched in the two-point conversion to give Kailua a 16-0 halftime lead.

In the second half, Alo continued to run behind tackle Keoki Fraser, running the same play seven straight times before giving the ball up on downs.

Yoshino scrambled 17 yards on a crucial third-and-14. After catching Kailua offside, Yoshino gave the momentum right back to Alo and the Surfriders when he fumbled on a botched option play. Kailua linebacker Puna Maiava scooped up the mistake and took it 49 yards for a back-breaking touchdown. Cantiberos hit Kepa from 27 yards out to tack on the final score.
