Antone 'Tony' Jardine
By Harold Morse
was chauffeur for
four mayors
Star-BulletinAntone "Tony" Jardine, 92, of Kailua chauffeured four Honolulu mayors and two acting mayors and was described as courteous, efficient and always well groomed.
Jardine died Saturday at home.
He and his two late brothers -- John and Albert -- had more than 100 years of service with the city among them. Jardine had 35. His oldest brother, John, was a Honolulu police detective whose career spanned 46 years. His younger brother, Albert, with the Road Division, was a city employee 30 years. The three brothers spent a total of 111 man-years with the city.
Mayors Jardine chauffeured were George Fred Wright, Charles S. Crane, Lester Petrie and John H. Wilson. Acting mayors were Manuel C. Pacheco and David Y.K. Akana.
For about two weeks after the Pearl Harbor attack, Antone Jardine stayed at City Hall 24 hours a day, sleeping in a downstairs phone room to take incoming emergency calls while Mayor Petrie slept upstairs. All the mayors treated him as almost family.
The three Jardine brothers took their work seriously and were men of integrity, said John's granddaughter, Darlene Forsythe. Although there was mutual respect and admiration in all cases, her chauffeur uncle had one favorite mayor. He most fondly recalled the "very loved" Mayor Wright, she said.
Antone Jardine was born in Honolulu. He became mayoral chauffeur in 1935, giving it up in 1947 to become an investigator with the Department of Public Works.
He figured he had 180,000 accident-free miles behind him.
Antone Jardine is survived by nephews, nieces, grandnephews, grandnieces, great-grandnephews and great-grandnieces.
