Dan Robinson replaced Josh Skinner at quarterback
Thursday and led Hawaii to its only score.
Troubling trend This is the kind of trend that makes the wise guys in Las Vegas rush to the casino sports books early Monday morning.
The Rainbows travel to Utah,
the site of their last road victory
following a bye week -- in 1990They want to be first in line to get the best possible number before anyone else with the same information causes the spread to move against them.
University of Hawaii head football coach Fred vonAppen prefers that no one talk about this trend, which dates back to 1990, but here it is:
Hawaii has lost its last eight road games after a bye week by an average score of 42-12. On a positive note, the last time the Rainbows won a road game after a bye was Sept. 22, 1990 in Salt Lake City. After losing to Arizona, 27-6, in its opener Thursday, UH is at Utah Sept. 19.
At Utah in 1990, Jason Elam had field goals of 22 and 50 yards and quarterback Garrett Gabriel tossed a 73-yard touchdown pass to slotback Jeff Sydner as UH won, 19-7.
There are several sideshows to this main event. This will be Hawaii's last trip to Utah -- at least as long as UH president Kenneth Mortimer is in charge. It also will be the first meeting between a team from the Western Athletic Conference and a WAC defector.
Throw in the fact that there are 12 players from Hawaii on the Utah team, and it has the makings of a memorable event.
