Zena Mossman Schuman, a kamaaina well-known for her business activity and philanthropic work, especially for her part in co-founding Honolulu Waldorf School, died last Thursday in St. George, Utah, having turned 96 two days before.

Her husband, Gustave William Schuman, who died in 1963, the son of the founder of Schuman Carriage Co., served as president and general manager of this family enterprise, having been its treasurer earlier.

Zena Schuman became a director and corporate secretary of Schuman Carriage Co. in the 1950s and continued in that capacity for some years after her husband's death. The business remains in the family.

Born in Honolulu, she was the daughter of Harry and Leilani Holt Mossman.

Waldorf School in Niu Valley opened in 1961. It was then known as Mohala Pua School, and Zena Schuman was president and chairman of the board. She enunciated the school approach to learning simply. "What we're trying to shape and form is a rounded, balanced individuality," she said.

Bonnie Ozaki-James, faculty

chairwoman of Honolulu Waldorf School, said the philosophy is the same at the school but the curriculum has adapted to needs of children of today. Grades run from preschool through high school. "The school has an incredibly interesting and exciting curriculum," she added. "Zena's contribution to education in Hawaii has spanned three generations so far, and we hope will continue well into the future."

Zena Schuman moved to Utah some years ago but frequently returned here. She was on hand for the graduation of Waldorf's first high school class in June.

A graduate of the Kamehameha School for Girls, she also attended schools on the mainland. Active in a number of civic and community groups, her affiliations included leadership roles in Soroptimist, Anthroposophical Society and Daughters ofml6 Zena Mossman

Schuman Hawaii.

She is survived by son G.E. "Dutch" Schuman; daughters Carol Leilani Schuman and Manulani S. Lyall; sister Leilani Houtchens; six grandchildren; and 13 great-

grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Kawaiahao Church. The family requests aloha attire. Inurnment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Honolulu Waldorf School-Schuman Fund, 350 Ulua St., Honolulu 96821.
