In the Line of Fire

Four police cars boxed in a suspected stolen vehicle at Hekaha Street and Moanalua Road in Waimalu. Fe Benito, 16, was driving. Two other youths were in the car with him.

1. Officers approached the car from behind. Fe Benito allegedly reversed suddenly, nearly hitting an officer and striking the police car behind him.

2. Another officer fired several shots at the car.

3. The car hurtled forward, slamming against two police cars, and sped away amid another volley of police gunfire. Five bullet casings were found later.

4. The stolen Honda went more than a half-mile down Moanalua Road before spinning out and hitting a cement parking structure across the street from Pali Momi Medical Center.

5. Fe Benito was found slumped in the driver's seat, a bullet wound in his head. He died a few hours later. Passenger Chauncey Hata, 16, was wounded three times and survived. The other youth escaped.


Aftermath

The shooting was ruled justified.
