1. Mark Hartman
May 7, 1998
Police responded to a complaint about a man sleeping in his car for more than two hours with the engine running. It was 1:37 p.m. When police arrived on Brokaw Street in Kapahulu, here's what unfolded: 1. One officer parked his three-wheeled GO-4 vehicle in front of Hartman's car; another officer pulled up behind and approached Hartman.

2. The officer tapped on the window to awaken Hartman.3. Hartman, 30, woke up and backed his car into the police car parked behind him.
4. He pulled out, but hit a pickup truck parked across the street.
5. He backed away from the truck and drove toward an officer. The officer fired twice, hitting Hartman both times. Hartman fled in his Dodge, and police lost sight of the car on Kapiolani Boulevard. Hartman was spotted later on Young Street. He called for an ambulance and was later arrested.
The shooting was ruled justified by the city prosecutor's office. Hartman was indicted June 1 for attempted murder of a police officer, auto theft, leaving the scene of an accident and two counts each of criminal property damage and drug offenses. Aftermath
