Military police at Kaneohe Marine Base have found a drifting buoy that was deployed more than three years ago by the National Data Buoy Center. Buoy deployed
3 years ago foundThe buoy, about 12 feet long, measures air temperature, wind direction and speed, pressure and sea-surface temperatures.
Such buoys are used to obtain reliable meteorological data from remote ocean areas.
The buoy apparently had drifted east across the northern Pacific Ocean, south off the California coast, then west to Hawaii.
Trustee salary reform signed by Cayetano
When the new year begins, the pay of trustees for the Bishop Estate and other charitable trusts will be limited to an amount that is "reasonable under the circumstances."That's the heart of a measure Gov. Ben Cayetano signed into law today. Cayetano has said the high salaries for Bishop Estate trustees -- about $800,000 annually -- is a key factor in the furor surrounding the estate, the state's largest private landowner whose beneficiaries, the students and alumni of Kamehameha Schools, have questioned how the estate has operated.
The state attorney general's office is currently investigating the estate.

All Oahu public libraries will be closed Friday, Aug. 28 for Library Institute Day.Library employees will be participating in all-day training sessions on that day.
Washington Place hosts story of 'lost battalion'
Washington Place will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday and Monday for a viewing of a historical exhibit on the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and the 100th Battalion.The exhibit tells the story of the rescue of the "lost battalion" in France during World War II. Soldiers from the 100th Battalion were able to reach a unit from Texas cut off by Germans. The 100th took four casualties for every one of the 211 Texans rescued.

Police have arrested a 25-year-old Kailua man who may be responsible for a series of "cat burglaries" in East Honolulu and Mililani over the past three months.Cat burglars are considered dangerous because they enter homes while occupants are present, police said.
Detective Glenn Muramoto of the police new Auto Theft/Assault Concept unit said multiple first-degree charges are pending against the suspect, who has admitted to burglarizing 15 homes in Manoa, Hawaii Kai, Kahala, Diamond Head and Waikiki.
Police have recovered three vehicles valued at $125,000 and numerous other stolen items, including handbags, cameras and antiques, Muramoto said.
The man is also a suspect in more than a dozen Mililani burglary cases.
Accident on H-1 Freeway takes life of Ewa woman
A 24-year-old Ewa woman died yesterday of injuries suffered in a one-car accident Saturday on the H-1 freeway near the Pearl Harbor offramp.The medical examiner's office identified the woman as Leslie Diamsay. She was pronounced dead at 3:30 p.m. at Queen's Hospital. Diamsay is Oahu's 33rd traffic fatality of the year.
A 22-year-old Pearl City woman, a passenger in the car, remains in critical condition at Queen's.
Maui woman is charged with attempted murder
WAILUKU -- A 44-year-old Maui woman has been charged with second-degree attempted murder in the stabbing of a man in Wailuku.Cecilia A. Nishida of Wailuku was being held on $50,000 bail.
Police said the man came into Maui Memorial Hospital with a stab wound yesterday morning, after a domestic dispute at a Pule Place residence in Happy Valley.
The man, who underwent surgery, was listed between satisfactory and guarded condition at the hospital this morning.
Bank robbed at Wahiawa was 26th hit this year
The Wahiawa branch of First Hawaiian Bank was robbed yesterday by a man who handed a teller a note stating he was armed and demanding 10 large bills.The robbery was reported at 9:55 a.m.
It was the 26th robbery of a financial institution this year in Hawaii.
Man booked in kidnapping of his former girlfriend
Police yesterday arrested a 47-year-old man for allegedly kidnapping his ex-girlfriend in Chinatown.The woman, 38, told police the man forced her into a video store booth at 32 North Hotel St. at about 3:45 p.m. and struck her.
She managed to escape when an employee of the store intervened.
