Hurstys the
man in Tinman
He unseats Imonen for

the men's crown; Nichols
again top woman
Special to the Star-BulletinFrom the finish of the 1997 Tinman Triathlon until a little before 7:45 a.m. yesterday, Peter Hursty had one thing on his mind. Run.
Realizing that the final leg of the Tinman, the 10-kilometer run, had been his downfall in previous years, Hursty hit the track harder than ever in preparing for this year.
As a result, for the first time in five years, the winner's trophy won't have four-time defending champion Brent Imonen's name on it.
The trophy belongs to Hursty.
"This is great," Hursty said. "Except for the wind, the weather was great, everything was great."
Although a former University of Hawaii swimmer, it was the second leg of the triathlon, the 25-mile bicycle ride, where Hursty was able to separate himself from Imonen and the rest of the 1,100 participants.
"I really burned it on the hard part. The wind was blowing, but I got ahead," Hursty said. "I looked back, saw I had some room, then I knew I just had to be efficient."
When he crossed the finish line one hour, 42 minutes and 43 seconds after he started his swim, Hursty looked as fresh as a man finishing a morning stroll.
"Yeah, I stayed conservative on the run and kept checking back," Hursty said. "I still had some left in the tank at the end just in case."While Imonen came up short in his quest to repeat, women's defending champion Katherine Nichols again took the women's open title. Despite being a few minutes off last year's time, she was happy with the win after experiencing some early difficulties.
A bad bicycle wheel almost knocked her out of the race, but with a little help, Nichols was able to get started and finish 20th overall in the cycling portion.
"I had a little panic attack, but I am really grateful, really grateful, I was given a new wheel and was able to go." Nichols said.
Most competitors were able to avoid problems like bad tires, but a common problem was the stiff headwinds in the bicycle portion.
Jonathan Chun, a special-education teacher at Farrington High School, agreed, citing the winds as the toughest part of his fourth triathlon.
"It made the bike tough, but that's part of the challenge" Chun said. "It's part of the fun."
Former University of Hawaii football lineman Kendall Goo enjoyed his second Tinman.
"It's more of an individual challenge than football," Goo said. "It's a great way to stay in shape. A Navy Seal buddy of mine turned me on to it and now I am hooked."
Steve Oyama, an employee of Redline Automotive in Aiea, remarked, "I think I'm the only guy in automotive who does this."
After the race, most participants had similar intentions. Hursty summed it up best, saying "What am I going to do now? Barbecue and relax. Relax and barbecue."
