ombudsman and legislative aideYen Lipp Lew, state ombudsman since 1992 and longtime aide to former state Senate President Richard "Dickie" Wong, died Friday.
Lew, 58, was appointed to the six-year term as ombudsman in 1992 after assisting Wong in various capacities. He joined Wong, now a Bishop Estate trustee, in 1974 when Wong chaired the Senate Ways and Means Committee, before heading the Senate.
Prior to then, Lew had been a researcher with the ombudsman's office and a member of Lt. Gov. Thomas P. Gill's staff.
In 1970, he was president of the Hawaii chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union.
He retired as state ombudsman earlier this year because of illness.
Lew was born in Los Angeles.
Friends may call from 8:30 a.m. Friday at Mililani Mortuary at 20 S. King St. Funeral services will begin at 10 a.m.
Survivors include his widow, Annette; daughter, Jessica; brother, Art; and sister, Sing Wong.
The family requests that flowers be omitted.

of crashed helicopterCharles E. Chuck Lowe, pilot of a helicopter that crashed near Waialeale Crater on Kauai killing him and five passengers Thursday, will be remembered in services 11 a.m. Monday. He was 45. Friends may call after 9 a.m. at Kalaheo Missionary Church. Lowe, who worked for Ohana Helicopters, had retired from the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant commander. He will be buried with military honors Monday at the Kauai Veterans Cemetery.
Lowe, of Kekaha, Kauai, was born in Oklahoma. He is survived by his wife, Ann; his daughter, Mary K.; his mother, Lou Solberg; and brothers Larry and John.
