Florida teen wins YM contest
Star-BulletinNina Arduz, 13, of North Miami Beach, Fla., is the winner of the 1998 YM/Cover Girl Cosmetics Model Search.
Kamehameha Schools students Kaleinani Keawe and Derika Tamura were finalists in the contest held recently in New York, and they will be featured in YM magazine's October issue. Entry forms for the 1999 model search will also appear in the issue.
Other finalists were Maya Carter of Indianola, Iowa; Yon Choi of Denver, Colo.; Michelle Dietl of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; Vanessa Jones of Highland Park, Ill.; Natasha Neely of Wichita, Kan.; and Liz Smallwood of DeLand, Fla. They were chosen from among more than 10,000 teens ages 13 to 18.
Arduz received a $10,000 check from Cover Girl and will appear in one of the company's national print ads, as well as on the cover of YM's October issue.
Hawaii's Junior Miss
stands with finalistsHawaii's Jocelyn Chong was one of eight finalists in the America's Junior Miss pageant held yesterday in Mobile, Ala.
Chong, a senior at University Lab School with a 4.0 grade-point average, performed a Chopin waltz on piano, joined other finalists in an energetic dance number and answered a question about the Internet in the live television broadcast.
Susan Davidson of Pennsylvania was named America's Junior Miss and was awarded a $40,000 college scholarship. First runner-up was Evelyn Huang of California; second runner-up was Mary Fletcher of North Carolina.
As a finalist, Chong also will receive a $2,500 scholarship award.
