Elderly could save
at Shaffer's market

Many people talk about helping senior citizens; Alex Shaffer listened.

He listened when a woman proposed mobile markets to provide fresh produce, eggs and meat to elderly people in California.

Thus was born the Food Advisory Service to provide food at cheap prices for seniors.

Shaffer, who started the service, died Monday in Honolulu at age 84.

The Chicago-born Shaffer was president and general manager of Blue Crown Trading Stamps and founder of Holiday Mart.

He is survived by his wife, Pearl, son Larry, daughter Shelley, six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at Temple Emanu-El, 2560 Pali Highway.
