Star-BulletinBishop Estate trustees Gerard Jervis and Oswald Stender have withdrawn a temporary restraining order barring the estate's lawyers from questioning Kamehameha Schools staffers about the release of a highly critical report.
The withdrawal, filed Friday, came after the estate's full board agreed to hold further discussions on the issue, according to Ronald Sakamoto, Jervis' attorney.
The 10-day restraining order, approved by Circuit Judge Kevin Chang, was set to expire today.
Jervis and Stender filed for the restraining order on June 12, saying the estate's outside law firm, McCorriston Miho Miller Mukai, was interrogating staffers in a heavy-handed way about the release of an accreditation report from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.
The accreditation report blamed trustees for dysfunctional management and a "perverse application of top-down decision making" at the estate-run Kamehameha Schools.
Summaries of the report appeared in the local media on March 19. The association recently accredited Kamehameha Schools for three years instead of the six that it sought.
According to Sakamoto, interviews of staffers will not take place until the full board reaches some form of consensus. But Sakamoto said it's his understanding that the board is looking at alternative ways of addressing the issue.
William McCorriston, an estate attorney, said this morning that he was not aware that the temporary restraining order was withdrawn, but said he would wait until he heard from the board before proceeding.
An estate spokesman could not be reached for comment this morning.
