Memorial service Sunday
By Harold Morse
for attorney, banker Morita
Star-BulletinJames M. Morita of Honolulu, an attorney who also was a City Bank executive and president of the Hawaii Bankers Association, died Thursday. He was 84. A prominent attorney before he turned to banking, he was a graduate of Georgetown University Law Center, where in 1995 a chair was established in his name.
Morita was chairman and president of CB Bancshares Inc., the bank holding company of City Bank. CB Bancshares and Georgetown Law Center in Washington, raised funds to endow the Asian Legal Studies Chair in honor of Morita. It enables a full-time law center faculty member to concentrate on enhancing Georgetown's Asian Legal Policy Studies program. James Kamo, also an attorney, who became chairman when Morita retired at age 83, said Morita measured up absolutely as both an attorney and banker.
He was an excellent leader, Kamo said. He was a very successful private attorney, also a corporation counsel -- an attorney for the City and County of Honolulu.
Morita was born in Kealakekua-Kona, Hawaii. He was graduated in 1932 from Mid-Pacific Institute and the University of Hawaii in 1936. He earned his law degree at Georgetown in 1940.
His education also included later study at the Stonier Graduate School of Banking in 1970.
He was in private law practice in years 1941-50 and first assistant public prosecutor with the city in 1951-52.
He served as a city attorney in 1953-1955 and special counsel for the city in 1955-57, after which he returned to private practice.
He began to combine the law and banking when he helped found City Bank in 1958 and its doors opened in 1959. He became affiliated with Citibank Properties in 1960 and eventually rose through the banking hierarchy to the top, retiring last year.
He held directorships with Crown Corp. and Tongg Publishing and trusteeships with Hawaii Loa College and the Japan-American Society. Also, he was active in a number of civic endeavors.
He is survived by wife Aiko; daughters Caryn S. and Marie M.; brothers Alexander N., the Rev. Isamu and Nathan S., and sisters Ann A. Morita and Eleanor Chikasue.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. Sunday at Harris United Methodist Church. Call after 4 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to charity.
