Lydia Namahana Maioho, longtime curator, custodian, guide and kahu of Mauna Ala, the Royal Mausoleum on Nuuanu Avenue, died Thursday at home. She was 77.

She had been in Kaiser Hospital, where she was diagnosed with cancer. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Members of her family have served as curators for royal remains entrusted to the mausoleum for at least four generations. A descendant of High Chief Ho‘olulu, who cared for the bones of Kamehameha I, she was the eighth curator of Mauna Ala, retiring last year after some 30 years of service.

Both her father and her mother had been mausoleum curators before her. Aunty Lydia, as she was known, was a graduate of St. Andrew's Priory.
