Barry M. Goldwater was in Hawaii many times in the 1960s and '70s speaking to various groups about subjects ranging from "radical liberalism" to "the Watergate business."

Here in 1959 to talk to the Hawaii Employers' Council, the Republican U.S. senator from Arizona predicted a "strong swing" to Republicanism in 1960.

Mincing no words, he told the council that conservatives are concerned with individual welfare but not the "spoon-feeding, dehumanizing kind of interest which is given lip service by the radical liberal group."

Goldwater and his wife were to be guests of honor at a surprise dinner party in Hawaii in December 1966.

But when flying here he was told his mother died at age 91 in Phoenix. The Goldwaters flew back immediately after landing.

They returned a few days later and continued with plans to join a group on Maui and vacation in Asia.

Talking to reporters then, Goldwater, who had given up his Senate position for an unsuccessful run against President Johnson in 1964, said the American people didn't trust Johnson. He said it was time to put a stop to some of the Great Society programs.

The conservative Republican attacked Johnson again in a speech here in 1969 to the Western Republican Conference, saying Johnson didn't have "the brains" to withdraw U.S. troops from Vietnam.

He defended then-Vice President Spiro T. Agnew and said some anti-war demonstrators suffered from "delirium treason."

He said there was a concerted effort "to fasten the blame for all of today's problems on the Nixon administration."

Heading for the South Pacific to watch the Apollo 17 splashdown in December 1972, Goldwater advocated further space explorations to remain in competition with the rest of the world. "I am not the type of guy who believes in going backwards," he said.

More than 3,000 students gave him an unfriendly welcome, with emotional outbursts and a demonstration, when he spoke at the University of Hawaii in November 1969.

One student apologized for heckling, but Goldwater said he was used to it.

In November 1978, Goldwater addressed the Society of Industrial Realtors here, saying the election a few days later was a warning to President Carter and Congress that Americans were tired of being pushed around.
