


The men and women of Brigham Young-Hawaii won 21 of their 22 singles matches yesterday at Tulsa, Okla., to stand at or near the top of the standings after the first round of the NAIA National Tennis Tournament. Seasiders 21-1 in
NAIA tennisThe BYUH women tied for the team lead at 11 points with Auburn-Montgomery of Alabama, with whom they shared the No. 1 ranking going into the tourney. The BYUH men had 10 points, good for a tie for second place with two other schools, one point behind co-leaders Au-burn-Montgomery and Oklahoma Christian.
Defending singles champion Karin Ptaszek and runner-up Teresa Stromberg led the BYUH women with two 6-0, 6-0 victories apiece. Toshi Matsui had two 6-1, 6-0 victories for the BYUH men.
On the eve of the tourney, BYUH's Paiao Short was named the Senior Player of the Year at the national annual awards banquet.
HAWAII OPEN DEADLINE FRIDAY: Entry deadline is Friday for the Hawaii Open tennis tournament, sponsored by the Department of Parks and Recreation at the Diamond Head Tennis Center May 30-31.
The Oahu Public Parks Junior vets and seniors event has been rescheduled from June 20-21 to Aug. 1-2. That deadline is July 24.

NIHIPALI VOLLEYBALL CAMP: Former UCLA volleyball All-American Paul Nihipali will conduct an instructional volleyball camp for boys and girls ages 10-18 at Roosevelt High School on Saturday and Sunday, May 30-31.
The sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and from 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
The tuition fee of $95 per camper covers two days of fun and intense training and includes a T-shirt.

ACADEMIC HONORS TO LUM, CHANG: First baseman Joyce Lum of the University of Hawaii and outfielder Keaomalamalama Chang of UNLV were among 11 softball players selected to the GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America District VII first team.
Lum, a sophomore from Kaneohe, carried a 3.48 grade point average in General Studies. Chang, a sophomore from Laie, had a 3.55 GPA in Hotel Administration.
They are eligible for national Academic All-America honors, which will be announced on June 4.
LUM IN U.S. KAYAK TRIALS: Kayaker Mahealani Lum of Wahiawa is competing this week in Chula Vista, Calif., for a place on the U.S. national women's canoe and kayak sprint team.
Lum is a resident at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista.
BYUH LINES UP SOCCER PROSPECTS: Brigham Young-Hawaii soccer coach has received verbal commitments from Justin Wager, a back defender from Kennewick (Wash.) High School, and Jason Taylor, a forward from Eagle (Idaho) High School to play for the Seasiders next season.
