Coronation party coming up

Feathers and tradition led to the first awards handed out last night in the 1998 Miss Universe Pageant's Presentation Show at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Wendy Fitzwilliams, Miss Trinidad/Tobago, wearing a gold and black bikini and dozens of lengthy feathers on her head, hips and arms, captured first place in the National Costume competition. She was followed by Miss Peru, Karim Bernal, and Miss Mexico, Katty Fuentes.

Miss Slovak Republic, Vladimira Hrenovcikova, took top honors as Miss Photogenic.

About 3,000 people attended last night's event, where 10 local judges selected 10 contestants from the 81 competitors in the swimsuit and evening gown competition.

Those 10 will be announced at the Miss Universe Pageant on Tuesday starting at 3 p.m. when the new Miss Universe will be named. The show will be telecast tape delayed on KGMB at 8 p.m.

Miss Universe Brook Lee's reign comes to a party ending Tuesday night at the Coronation Gala Celebration at the Hawaii Convention Center after the broadcast on KGMB from the Stan Sheriff Center.

Dozens of Hawaii entertainers will perform and 10 of Hawaii's chefs will cook for the event. Participating chefs include Oliver Altherr, Chai Chaowasaree, Steve Chiang, Patrick Callarec, David Paul Johnson, Kelvin Ro, Nick Sayada, Jean-Luc Voegele, Alan Wong, Roy Yamaguchi and Wayne Kamamura. California Pizza Kitchen is providing hors d'oeuvres.

Donald Trump, co-partner with CBS in the Miss Universe Pageant, will present awards to Miss Universe 1998 and the top 10 contestants. Entertainment will be provided by hula halau, chanters and local bands and groups, including Rolando Sanchez and Salsa Hawaii, The Krush, Dr. T's Orchestra, and Sunland.

The main program will be emceed by Kimo Kahoano, following a welcome from Gov. Ben Cayetano. As guests leave, they'll receive a souvenir.
