Born and educated in Europe, he spoke six languages and served Sheraton Corp. for 25 years, including his service as general manager of the 1,856-room Sheraton-Waikiki from 1976 to 1979.
Carl Kent was truly an accomplished hotelier, a man who had great feeling for his hotels guests and employees, said John Brogan, president of Sheraton Hotels in Hawaii. He made a great contribution to the Sheraton organization.
Kent, who was born in Germany, began his hotel career in Italy, later managed hotels in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and came to Hawaii from the Sheraton office in Brussels, Belgium.
He first retired in 1981, after managing hotels for Sheraton in a dozen countries and developing and opening several properties.
He then became president of Universal Hotels at Marbella, on the Mediterranean cost of Spain, which also has hotels in Greece.
After five years, he retired a second time, settling in Honolulu. He then was invited to run Oahu Country Club, becoming its executive manager.
He was active with Hawaii Visitors Bureau, Hawaii Hotel Association, the Travel Industry Management School and Hawaii Pacific University. Among his affiliations, he belonged to the Rotary Club and was on the board of Chaine des Rotisseurs of Honolulu.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Rayma, son Ron, and daughter Suzy.
