Kamehameha Schools will open a branch on Maui.

"This is history -- the first permanent Kamehameha Schools campus to be built outside of Oahu," said chairman Richard S.H. Wong.

Bishop Estate trustees approved $15 million for first-phase construction, it was announced yesterday.

Groundbreaking will be May 4 for Phase One, which includes improvements and design and implementation of an information technology plan.

Voice, video and data technologies comparable to that at the Kapalama campus will be part of the new school, which will be built at Pukalani.

Each classroom will have built-in capability to transmit and receive video, enhance public communications, support instructional programming and access "distance learning" opportunities.

The major strategy for the information technology plan is to enhance the programs at neighbor-island schools through the use of distance education and prepare students for the 21st century through the use of technologies.

"It is our hope and our vision that in the future this estate will have the wherewithal to continue and build upon what is being started with our Maui campus," Wong said.

Construction will include campus roadways, a well, two single-story classroom buildings, a library and administration building, caretaker's house and guardhouse at the driveway entrance, an athletic field and landscaping of the 15-acre parcel.

Classroom buildings are targeted for completion no later than June 21, 1999.

Phase One development will serve 200 students kindergarten through eighth grade.

It is expected to be operational by the start of the 1999-2000 school year.

Phase Two construction will include a gymnasium and cafetorium and is targeted for completion by the start of the 2000-2001 school year.
