Cayetano appoints her as
interim trustee for the Office
of Hawaiian Affairs

Gov. Ben Cayetano today named Kamehameha Schools educator Gladys Brandt as interim trustee for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs.

"I will be pleased to work under the leadership that exists now," Brandt said.

"I don't take sides, I just hug everybody."

OHA Chairwoman A. Frenchy DeSoto called the selection "a good choice."

Cayetano, who approached Brandt about the job, said she is highly respected not only by the Hawaiian people but the community at large.

"I chose Mrs. Brandt because I believe her vast experience and demonstrated leadership skills will help OHA during this period of transition," said Cayetano, who added another reason was because Brandt doesn't intend to run for OHA trustee this fall. Brandt's term will be until November. She replaces the late Billie Beamer, whose term as OHA trustee is one of five up for re-election this fall.

Brandt, a former principal at the Kamehameha School for Girls and past director of the school's high school division, is chairwoman on Kamehameha's advisory council to the president.

She has served as chairwoman of the University of Hawaii Board of Regents, and is currently vice president of the UH Foundation board of trustees.

She is also one of the co-authors of the "Broken Trust" article that triggered the current Bishop Estate investigation by the State Attorney General's office.
