Ducks flew coop
for bigger coupsSO there was Marsh McLennan's Puna Chillingworth showing daughter Macey around a few mainland campuses. During a visit to his alma mater, the University of Oregon (which he refers to as "The Harvard of the West"), he had to get some shirts laundered overnight. He took them to a nearby laundry and inquired if they could do them overnight for a "former Duck." The Ducks tend to waddle together so he was told they could, and when he returned the next day all was in order except a seamstress was sewing a new button on his collar. To make conversation while waiting, he asked where she was from. "Springfield," she replied. "By any chance," Puna went on, "did you know Duane Cargill, who went on to play for the Ducks?" "Know him," she replied, "I help get him through high school by tutoring him." She asked what he's doing now and Chillingworth told her he owns Western Engineering, a large building concern in Hawaii. She looked aghast: "And I work in a laundry???" ...
MY favorite Macey anecdote revolves around when Chillingworth first introduced her to the late Alfred Goldman. The millionaire said to Puna, "If you're going to name your daughter after a department store, why not Bloomingdale's?" ...
Jack Palance for Governor
NOT that it's an unusual occurrence, but Frank Fasi, who takes umbrage the way the rest of us take breaths, didn't like Bud Smyser's column last week. That's the one in which he said Linda Lingle could be a strong Republican candidate for governor if she beats Fasi, adding "He's my age, 77, and too old for four rough years." Former mayor Fasi fired back that he does 150 push-ups a day plus exercises and holds his weight at 170, whereas it once got up to 200. "I'm in as good a shape as John Glenn," said Fasi, and "in better shape than all the rest of the people running for governor." Yes, but can he do one-arm push-ups like Jack Palance did on an Oscarcast? ...IF Frank Fasi is so eager to jump into Gov. Ben Cayetano's slippers, here's his chance. Both the governor and Vicky Cayetano donated slippers to the silent auction of celebrity slippers for the 1998 Visitor Industry Charity Walk. Maybe they'll even go as a pair. Others who contributed slippers for the auction at last week's kick-off breakfast were Don Ho, Keali'i Reichel, Henry Kapono, Jim Nabors, Wally Amos, Glenn Medeiros and a tiny pair from Emme Tomimbang. Chairing this year's walk, which will take place May 16, is Sandi Kato-Klutke, G.M. of the Kaua'i Beach Villas ...
Taking stock
DON'T know how your stock holdings are doing, but Peter Sansavero's, former Merrill Lynch honcho here and in S.F., must be doing very nicely, thank you. Aside from the large luxury condo he keeps on the beach at Waikiki, Sansavero has large homes in Albany, Calif., across the Bay Bridge from S.F. and another in Palm Springs. Oh yes, and a little cabin in ski country at Tahoe. Forget E.F. Hutton: When Sansavero speaks, I listen ... Then there's Maui's Irwin Yamamoto, who publishes an investment newsletter called the Yamamoto Forecast. Ask him what his favorite stock is and he won't hesitate to tell you it's a stock that cost him $215. It can't be sold for a profit or to anyone else, nor will it ever pay a dividend. What makes it so special? It's a share of the Green Bay Packers football team. Besides being a longtime Packer fan, Yamamoto now refers to himself as "co-owner" as well. He's still in mourning over the Pack's upset loss to Denver in the last Super Bowl ...
