No-hitter gives
Gentle 50 wins
and Coolen 250

It was a double celebration at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium last night with University of Hawaii coach Bob Coolen and junior pitcher Kelly Gentle both picking up career milestone victories.

Coolen notched his 250th career coaching win at Manoa when the 11th-ranked Wahine completed a doubleheader sweep of Tulsa with a 10-2 win in the second game. In the 8-0 opener, Gentle became the third Hawaii pitcher to win 50 games when she tossed a no-hitter.

Gentle joins Brooke Wilkins and Kym Weil in the 50-win club. Gentle was a walk away from taking part in her second perfect game of the season. In Hawaii's season opener, Gentle and Desiree Duran combined on a five-inning perfect game in a 13-0 win over BYU-Hawaii.

Second baseman Regina Ka'aihili had three of Hawaii's 11 hits in the first game, with a double and a home run. Shortstop Kehau Cofran went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Joyce Lum drove in two runs.

In the second game, Cofran was 3-for-4, driving in two runs on a double and a triple. Duran scattered six hits against the Golden Hurricane.

Hawaii improved to 21-3 overall, 7-1 in the WAC. Tulsa is 8-11 and 1-5.

Both games were shortened to six innings due to the 8-run rule.

VOLLEYBOWS STAY NO. 4: Despite two losses to Pepperdine last week, the University of Hawaii men's volleyball team remained No. 4 in the Volleyball magazine poll announced yesterday.

The Rainbows (13-4) host Rutgers-Newark in nonconference matches Friday and Saturday at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Pepperdine (12-1) vaulted over UCLA (17-1) into the top spot after the Bruins' loss to BYU last week. The Cougars (9-3) stayed at No. 3.

UH SAILORS SIXTH: The University of Hawaii coed sailing team finished sixth with a 5-4 record in the Stanford Team Race last weekend at the Stanford Sailing Center in California. The host team won the regatta with a 9-0 record.

Sailing for UH were skippers Brent Harrill, Will James, Jeff Nelson and Garrett Woodworth, and crew Terry Mott, Laura Rehg and June Tomizawa.

Cal State-Stanislaus was first with a 590 total. Hawaii was at 602.
