Michael Myers, 70, a leader
among Hawaii developers

Commercial real estate developer Michael S. Myers died March 2 in Houston after a short illness. He was 70.

Some of his Hawaii projects included Cannery Row in Iwilei; Monsarrat Shopping Plaza; Aiea Shopping Plaza; Hualalai Medical Center in Kona; and the Nohona Kahala residential project.

Myers served as chairman of the Honolulu Developer’s Council and headed a mayor’s task force to review the city’s building permit process.

Born in Whittier, Calif., Myers came to Hawaii as a submariner during World War II. He returned in 1974 after a successful career as a stock broker in California.

Honolulu attorney Jim Stubenberg, a close friend, said Myers will be missed by his many friends.

“It was truely refreshing to work with someone of his drive and intellect,” Stubenberg said.

Myers is survived by wife June; mother Luella; daughters Cherri Myers and Kathy Franklin; sons Mitch, David and Pat; sister Virginia McCallon; and three grandchildren.

Services are scheduled 4 p.m. Friday at Diamond Head Unity Church. Aloha attire.

The family requests donations be made in his name to the American Cancer Society.

Ashes will be scattered at sea Saturday.

‘Ted’ Jacobsen, 95, designer
of Sea Life Park

John T. “Ted” Jacobsen, 95, of Honolulu, who was the local supervising architect of Ala Moana Center, died Friday.

Jacobsen also designed Sea Life Park, and took part in the design of the Arcadia Retirement Residence, the Gold Bond Building and the Ilikai Apartments at the Ala Wai Boat Harbor.

While he worked for Seattle developer Lloyd Martin, Jacobsen designed some of Honolulu’s first high-rise buildings, such as the Rosalie Apartments, the Admiral Cook in Waikiki and the Town House apartments near Ward Avenue.

Jacobsen undertook the landmark Maui Historic Church Survey. He also designed the Lahaina Architectural Style Book for the Lahaina County Historic Commission. He also was instrumental in carrying out the 1974 State Survey of Historic Places.

Born in Seattle, he is survived by wife Florence; daughters Tina Rieman, Jana Sparks, Pamela Gilbert and Candace Jacobsen; 11 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
