Moanalua storms
‘back door’

The Menehunes open the
state tournament with
an easy victory

For the third year in a row, Moanalua is off and running through the back door of the Hawaii High School Athletic Association boys' basketball tournament.

But for the first time in three unseeded state tournament starts, the two-time defending state champion Menehunes didn't have to rally from a substantial deficit to win in the preliminary round.

Behind senior guard Ramsey Williams' 20 points, which included four 3-pointers, Moanalua took command early and coasted past Hilo, 74-42, last night at McCabe Gym.

The Menehunes (13-1) will face fourth-seeded Maui Interscholastic League champion Maui High (12-1) today at 3:30 p.m. in the quarterfinals at Blaisdell Arena.

In other quarterfinal games at Blaisdell today, second-seeded Oahu Interscholastic Association champion Kalaheo (12-0) will face the MIL's Seabury Hall (12-2) at 5 p.m; top-seed and Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Iolani (11-1) will meet the OIA's Kaimuki (9-1) at 6:30; and Big Island Interscholastic Federation champ Waiakea (11-2) will face the ILH's St. Louis (12-3) at 8.

In its 1996 run, Moanalua had to come back from a nine-point, first-quarter deficit against Seabury Hall. In 1997, the Menehunes had to overcome a 15-point third-quarter deficit against Punahou.

But this time the savvy Menehunes, with three key third-year players, methodically took apart the BIIF power.

"They were patient on offense and their defense was beautiful -- a real team effort," Hilo head coach Larry Manliguis said.

Moanalua's Marvin Santiago and Williams opened the game with consecutive 3-pointers. Hilo's notorious fast break, which led it to eight Big Island Interscholastic Federation titles and one state title in the last nine years, never got going.

By the end of the first quarter, the Menehunes had a 26-10 lead, and at the half it was 43-17. Williams had 13 points and 10 Moanalua players broke into the scoring column.

That was a complete turnaround from the first half of last week's 54-45 loss to Kalaheo in the OIA title game, when Williams had 18 of the team's 29 points.

"We talked about that," Moanalua head coach Eddie Maruyama said. "Teams scouted us and we know they're going to give towards Ramsey, so that opens up a lot of holes."
