‘Kingie’ Kimball, 87, operated
the Halekulani Hotel

Robert King Kimball was a local politician, horseman and hotelier with an adventurous spirit who sought out the best that life had to offer.

“He enjoyed life and was always living it, whether in Tahiti or on Kauai or wherever he happened to be,” Mary Webb Kimball said of her husband of 58 years, who died Sunday in Queen’s Hospital at age 87.

Robert Kimball, whose nickname was “Kingie,” served in the Territorial Legislature from 1936 to 1944, was chairman of the territory’s Parks Board for many years, and later cofounded the Hawaii Visitors Bureau.

But he is best known for operating his family’s hotel in Waikiki.

The Halekulani Hotel, which Kimball and his brother George sold for $4.2 million in 1961, was purchased by the Kimball family in 1917.

The family previously owned the old Haleiwa Hotel but moved to town, leased a private

beach home for $150 a month and converted it into the hotel, which featured beautiful landscaping and cottages.

“There were a few cottages and big coconut groves and when I first saw it in 1939. It was like a big garden,” said Mary Kimball, who came to Hawaii on vacation from Minnesota and never left.

Robert Kimball loved to ride horses and became a well-known local polo player.

“One of my favorite memories is seeing him on horseback in Kahuku surrounded by kids,” his wife said. “He was teaching them to ride.”

Kimball also was known for his extensive South Seas travels.

After selling the Halekulani, Kimball and his brother built another hotel, the Waiohai, at Poipu, Kauai. Kimball also pioneered helicopter tours of the Garden Island’s Na Pali Coast.

Kimball is survived by his wife; daughter, Martha Putnam; granddaughter, Eliza Jewett, and grandson, Keith Putnam.

Services will be held Monday at 3 p.m. at the family’s Oahu Cemetery gravesite.
