Baby sitter admits shaking tot who died
WAILUKU -- Maui police said a Kahului man confessed to shaking a 15-month-old girl five or six times the night of Oct. 30 because she wouldn't stop crying.The baby, Shyla-Ann Silva, suffered massive head injuries and died two days later at Oahu's Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children.
Baby sitter Peter Pasigan Jr., 26, then boyfriend to Shyla's mother, is charged with second-degree murder. If convicted, he faces life in prison with a minimum mandatory sentence of 15 years, said Deputy Prosecutor Davelynn Tengan.
Pasigan will be arraigned at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 12 in Second Circuit Court.
Murder suspect to be arraigned
An unemployed 29-year-old man indicted for murder in the Oct. 1 death of retired business executive Kenneth Brewer of Hawaii Kai was to be arraigned today in Circuit Court.Stephen Bright was charged yesterday with second-degree murder in a secret Oahu grand jury indictment for allegedly beating the 58-year-old Brewer to death. Murder carries a life prison sentence with the possibility of parole.
Bright surrendered to police in Kaneohe at 7 p.m. yesterday and was arrested on a $600,000 warrant.
On Oct. 1, Brewer returned to his 14th-floor Hahaione Street apartment about 3:30 a.m. with Bright, whom he had met at a Kuhio Avenue bar, police said.
Bright allegedly used a chair to beat Brewer after the latter made sexual advances. Brewer was found dead in his soundproof bedroom at 6:41 a.m. by a roommate.
Investigators questioned Bright the following day, after he went to the Kaneohe police station and admitted involvement in the homicide, police said.
Unions authorize strike against Hilo newspaper
A strike has been authorized at the Hawaii Tribune-Herald by three unions representing about 65 employees at the Hilo newspaper.Members of the Hawaii Newspaper Guild, Honolulu Typographical Union and Graphic Communications International Union voted nine to one to authorize a strike.
The unions' three-year contracts have been extended month to month since May during negotiations with Donrey Media.
Soldier sentenced to one year for rape
A 25th Infantry Division soldier has been convicted of rape, adultery and entering someone else's quarters unlawfully and sentenced to one year in prison.Sgt. Micah Lerch was accused of unlawfully entering the room of a sleeping Schofield Barracks soldier on May 3 and raping her.
He was sentenced at a court-martial held over the weekend.
Besides a jail term, Lerch was reduced in rank to private, forfeited all pay and allowances and will be given a dishonorable discharge.

Police arrested a Kalihi man yesterday in connection with a Sept. 17 kidnapping and robbery.The suspect, 23, was arrested at 5:20 p.m. for allegedly holding a man, 30, and woman, 21, by gunpoint while driving, police said.
Kaneohe store robber sought
Kaneohe police are looking for a man who robbed an Island Mini-Mart last night.The suspect entered the store on the 45000 Block of Kam Highway at 10:30 p.m., pulled a handgun and demanded money, police said. He then fled with about $50.
The suspect is described as a 5-foot-6-inch man of Filipino descent who weighs 130 pounds and is in his 20s.
Oahu man's throat cut in fight
KAILUA-KONA -- A 30-year-old Honolulu man is in satisfactory condition in Kona Hospital after suffering a 4-inch knife cut on his throat during a fight last night, police said. He was taken to the hospital by his brother following the 11:25 p.m. incident in Kona Palisades subdivision.A 31-year-old Honolulu man was arrested at the scene by police but not immediately charged.
