Highly regarded session
By Rod Ohira
musician Guy On-Li Tseu
Star-BulletinGuy On-Li Tseu performed in the shadows, a talented guitarist and arranger who was better known to his peers in Hawaiian entertainment than the general public. He was the kind of guy who helped a lot of others succeed, entertainer Keith Haugen said, referring to Tseu, who died Oct. 22 at age 41. If you listen to Moe Keales (1996 CD) Imagine, his guitar playing is absolutely fantastic.
Guy was a side man in many other groups, so those in the business knew and respected his talent, Haugen added.
He had his ups and downs when leading his own groups, but Guy was a great talent.
Tseu was attending McKinley High School when Haugen first heard him singing at Waikiki Beach. He began performing with Haugen and his wife, Carmen, in 1981.
Guy was with us on everything weve recorded, Haugen said. He had a knack for listening to someone elses composition and arranging it to get the total sound.
Tseu, who grew up in Kakaako, loved playing guitar as much as his father did. James Y.S. Tseu taught his son how to play the guitar at a young age.
Music was his life, said Naomi Serdinia, Tseus wife.
Tseus own groups included Ka Aina, and the Heritage Band.
Besides the Haugens and Keale, Tseu was also associated with Cyril Pahinui, Jake Hoopai, Keao Low, Robi Kahakalau, Makana Hou, Greg Sardinha, Kanelau, Mike Seta, Kevin Kaulili, Iaukea Bright and Ezra Johnson.
He is survived by son, Mark Kekai Tseu, and daughter, Jessica Mele Tseu of Memphis; mother Rosita Tseu; brother, James, and sisters Jaymie Miller, Richelle Yong, Val Sonoda, and Sheril Paishon.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Nov. 7 and at 11 a.m. Nov. 8 at Hosoi Garden Mortuary.
