Five a day the local way

George Higa of Aina Haina writes, "While doing word puzzles, I came across a puzzle entitled 'Exotic Vegetables.' Many Asian vegetables common here in Hawaii were listed, names like daikon, gobo and mitsuba.

"Though locals here enjoy those Asian vegetables, I have never seen a list with their nutritional values. I would like to ask for a list of the nutritional values of local fruits and vegetables, please."

To mark "5 A Day" week this Sunday through Sept. 20 and Women's Health Month in September, and in response to Higa's query, the Nutrition Branch of the state Department of Health helped formulate the following list.

The nutritional values come from Hawaii food scientist Joannie Dobbs, nutrition consultant to the University of Hawaii
