Mei Chi Hyden,57, of Honolulu, a ticket agent for Northwest Airlines, died Monday at Queen’s Medical Center. She was born in China. George Roberts, Hawaii port director for the U.S. Customs Service, died Sunday morning at Castle Hospital.

Roberts, 89, was the country’s oldest and longest-serving federal employee on active duty, the federal government said.

He spent the last two decades as district director and area port director.

Roberts first came to Hawaii in 1930 as an Army sergeant in the military police stationed at Fort Shafter. In 1935, he became Honolulu customs inspector.

Roberts was appointed district director of customs for Hawaii in 1977. When he turned 70 the following year, his service was extended beyond the mandatory retirement age by then-President Jimmy Carter.

The mandatory retirement age for federal employees was abolished the next year.

Roberts is surved by his wife Velma Leilani.

Funeral arrangements are pending.
