India-pendence day
at the zoo

THIS promises to be a "zooper" weekend at the Honolulu Zoo. On Friday evening some 200 people, most of them Indians now living in Hawaii, will meet at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi near the zoo entrance and hold a celebration honoring the 50th anniversary of Indian Independence. There'll be lots of entertainment and music -- no, not "Who's Sari Now?" -- with the celebrants dancing and singing songs which were favorites of Gandhi's. The following day, Saturday, the Zoological Society is holding a "Zoobilee" to mark the official 50th anniversary of the zoo. The first director, Paul Breese, will fly in from the Big Island for the occasion. Lots of music (Kapena, White Light), entertainment and games for the kids, with Carole Kai emceeing ...

AS Anjelica Lundquist discovered, playing volleyball in the sand is different than on a hardwood floor. That's why she's opting for indoor play in Brazil, instead of beach volleyball. And Yuval Katz, probably the best player ever to spike a ball at UH, lost out in his beach volleyball match here. He'll be sticking to the hardwood from here on out as well, particularly since that's where the big bucks are. His trip to Hawaii was made possible by PrimeCo, and he'll sign autographs on the island of Maui for PrimeCo's grand opening in the Kaahumanu Shopping Center, as he did for PrimeCo's Executive Centre opening last November. ...

Forte lashes for Kimo

KNOWING my obsession with the fact that the word "forte," referring to one's area of expertise, properly should be pronounced with one syllable ("fort"), Kimo Wilder McVay suggests I set straight the all-female musical group Forte, which pronounces its name with two syllables: "For-tay." Sorry, Kimo, but in this case the young ladies are correct. "Forte" is also a musical term meaning "loud" and used in that context is pronounced "For-tay." He brought it up because the quartet of q-tees (Kristina Babaran, Gissele Tejada, Joanne Banda and Marlene Baldueza) will be opening Friday night for the Krush at the Sheraton Waikiki's Esprit Nightclub. It's a one-time-only show for Forte beginning at 8:30 p.m. No cover, no minimum and validated parking nightly for the Krush ...

LITTLE did I know when I juxtaposed items about Apple Computer guru Guy Kawasaki and former TV reporter turned minister Dan Chun that the two are great friends. Kawasaki is on the board of directors for Hawaiian Island Ministries (HIM) and is a Christian evangelist as well as an unofficial one for Macintosh. Chun is a co-founder with wife Pam of HIM. Kawasaki spoke to over 100 Christian business leaders at a HIM StraightTalk breakfast in May ...

RAM-bunctious Ron Jacobs had two isle products to root for on his L.A. Rams team last season, and this year he fears he may have none. Leo Goeas is gone and trying to hook on with Baltimore, while Bern Brostek, a former first round draft pick, has back spasms (and a big salary) and is being pressed by two youngsters ...

Blues song

THE fire code people aren't the only ones causing headaches for Studio 1 owner Jerry Breeden, who's had to close his Aloha Tower Marketplace nightclub temporarily. Former music director Jerry Martini took him to court for back pay due and won a $6,000 settlement -- Breeden was a no-show in court. And entertainment director Jimmy Borges turned in his notice even before the closing to concentrate on his own musical career. "Hey, play 'Summertime Blues,' will ya?" ...
