Bergmanis, 68,
‘outstanding physician’

Prominent neurosurgeon, Juris Bergmanis, died Aug. 7 in Honolulu. He was 68.

In 1992, Dr. Bergmanis, was the recipient of the Ke Kauka Po‘okela (The Outstanding Physician) award from Queen’s Medical Center. When asked why he thought he won the award, Bergmanis speculated, “The comment I get most often is: ‘You’re not like a doctor.’ ”

Born in Riga, Latvia, he received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

He moved to Hawaii in 1963 to work at Tripler Army Hospital.

In 1966, he joined the Honolulu Medical Group where he worked until 1986 when he began a private practice.

The doctor spoke five languages. He was a bass baritone in the choir of the Lutheran Church of Honolulu and studied Shakespeare at the University of Hawaii.

Memorial services will at 6 p.m. Friday at Lutheran Church of Honolulu, 1730 Punahou St., and private scattering of his ashes later.

Dr. Bergmanis is survived by his companion, Laura Masuda; sons, Mark S. and Eric C.; daughter, Ruth B. Foresman of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

The family requests that donations be made to Hospice Hawaii.

Manuel J. “Jose” Cruz, 69, of Ewa Beach died July 31 in St. Francis-West Hospital. Frederick “Bear” Cummings, 41, of Wailuku, a construction laborer, died Thursday in Maui Memorial Hospital. Esmael Dela Cruz, 96, of Honolulu died Thursday in Straub Hospital.
