Seymour strikes
mountain biking gold
Aloha games results below
By Neal Iwamoto
Star-BulletinChris Seymour used his experience and course knowledge to edge Chris Clark yesterday in a furious finish to the expert division of the Aloha State Games mountain bike race at Kualoa Ranch. Seymour took the gold in 1:08:30, one second ahead of Clark. Garuda McCarthy finished third in 1:08:50. Expert racers made four loops around Kualoa's 4.5-mile track.
"I knew he (Clark) was breathing down the back of my neck, so I had to go fast," Seymour said.
"I was ready to pounce," Clark jokingly replied.
"The course was really good," Seymour said. "It was really fast, rocky, and really dry."
Not to mention the occasional bovine observer. Numerous cows grazed the course during the competitors' practice runs.
Fortunately for the racers, the cows went home in time for the event to begin.
A member of the Wahaoelo mountain bike team and professional competitor since 1988, Seymour attributed his victory to experience. He was familiar with both his competitors and the terrain of Kualoa Ranch, leading the field by keeping his eyes open and "knowing when to go and when to back off."
Riders also had to contend with the heat of an open course that lacked shade.
"It was hot, hot, hot," exclaimed Tobias Brooks, winner of the intermediate division. "But it's a beautiful place to race and I would definitely like to see more races out here."
Seymour said that riders were reaching speeds of up to 35 mph while descending the mountain.
According to Greg Austin, the event's co-director, organizers aimed for a simple course that would draw Aloha State Games participants to mountain biking. With an emphasis on dirt roads rather than huge obstacles, the course called for more endurance than technical skills.
"The course was geared for beginners," he said.
Nearly half of the bikers yesterday raced in the beginners' field. Among them were Alan Blanchard and his two teen-age sons. For Blanchard, who was competing in only his second cross-country event, the lure of mountain biking is simple: "It's getting away from all the people and going to the mountains."
