Ljungquist's team
fourth in her pro debut

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. --Former University of Hawaii All-American Angelica Ljungquist and Team Discus Athletic finished fourth yesterday at the Bud Light Pro 4s women's tournament.

It was the professional beach debut for Ljungquist and "I think she was a little nervous," said Team Discus coach Tom Pestolesi, a former UH men's player. "It was a wake-up call for her, going from being the best in college to playing with others who were also the best. But she passed well, gained a lot of experience and she'll do just fine."

Team Discus was without its captain, middle blocker Kim Oden, sidelined with a knee injury.

Team Paul Mitchell won its second straight tour event by defeating Team Norelco in the final. The Pro 4s Tour moves next weekend to Newport, R.I.

ALEXIO WINS IN FIFTH: Kickboxing champ Dennis Alexio won his final fight in Hawaii Saturday night, punishing Barrington "Pit Bull" Patterson for five rounds before scoring a fifth-round technical knockout in the heavyweight title bout at Blaisdell Arena.

More than 6,000 people came out to see Alexio, who said he may fight again on the mainland. He plans to move from Hawaii to pursue a movie career.

ROBBOUT:Two-time world champion Tom Carroll eliminated Hawaii's Kalani Robb in a second-round heat of the Quiksilver Pro surf meet yesterday at Grajagan, East Java.

Carroll, a wildcard entry, defeated the former junior world champion, 16.75-16.40.

Four Hawaii surfers advanced to today's third round: Conan Hayes, Shane Dorian, Kaipo Jaquias and Sunny Garcia. Joining Robb on the sidelines were Hawaii's John Shimooka, Shawn Sutton and Ross Williams.

HOLTON ROCKS: At Lahaina, former Maui High track star Matthew Holton blazed over the new Maui Hard Rock Cafe 10-Kilometer Rock 'n' Roll Run course yesterday, finishing the 6.2-mile run in 34 minutes and 22 seconds.

The 19-year-old Holton, who just completed his freshman year at Bentley College, held off Wailuku's Daniel Marcus by four seconds. Marcus, 36, won the event in 1992 and '93.

The first female finisher among the 227 runners was Heidi Ballendorf, timed in 42:05 Second was Amy Patz at 42:33.

KAHUKU WATER POLO CHAMPS: Kahuku scored three goals in the fourth quarter to defeat Central, 6-4, in the Spring Public High School Water Polo Championship at Duke Kahanamoku Pool Saturday.

Mike Jones led the Red Raiders with three goals and Kahuku goalie Matt Jones was named the tournament's most valuable player. Central, a combined team from Leilehua and Mililani highs, was led by single goals from Alissa Schneider, Katie Neff and Lance Fujioka.

In the third-place game, Andrea Nishioka scored six goals to lead Roosevelt over Kalani, 14-6. Mike Huntsman and Barry Yukihiro each scored twice for the Falcons.

RAINBOW BASEBALL CAMP: The University of Hawaii Rainbow Summer Baseball Camp begins the first of its eight sessions June 10-13 at Rainbow Stadium.

Three camps are being offered: hitting (ages 7-18) for $75, regular (7-12) for $130 and play (7-12) for $150. Hitting and regular camps are half-day sessions while play camp runs from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. For more information, call 956-6247.

CLASS C NIT: A berth in the USSSA Slowpitch Softball World Series is the prize for the champion of the Hawaii Class C National Invitational Tournament, June 13-15, at Hickam Air Force Base.

Teams from California, Nevada and Hawaii will be competing. The entry fee of $225 and roster must be submitted to Straub by June 5.

STANFORD HEADS HILO TOURNEY: Stanford University headlines the eight-team field in the 6th City Bank/Aloha Airlines Big Island Invitational men's basketball tournament, Nov. 28-30, at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

Also entered in the event are Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Pacific, Butler, Montana, Valparaiso and host Hawaii-Hilo. Play begins at noon Nov. 28 and concludes with the 4:15 p.m. championship game Nov. 30.

TRANSPAC FIELD SET: Forty-one yachts are entered in this summer's 39th Transpacific Yacht Race, a biennial race from Palos Verdes, Calif., to Oahu.

The first of the four groups sets sail July 5. Steve Fossett will try to break his own multihull record of 6 days, 16 hours and 7:16 minutes set by the Lakota in 1995.
