Klaus von Bismarck, a former head of Germanys information centers abroad and a relative of 19th-century Iron Chancellor Otto von Bismarck, died Thursday in Cologne of a heart attack. He was 85.
As president of the government-funded Goethe Institut culture and information centers from 1977 to 1989, Bismarck helped increase cultural ties with communist countries.
His death was announced by Germanys largest public broadcasting network, WDR, which he headed from 1960 to 1976.
James Lee Byars, a sculptor with a strong following in Europe, died Thursday in Santa Fe, N.M., of cancer. He was 65.
Byars reputation in the United States never matched his reputation in Europe, a reviewer for the New York Times said last year when the artists work The Angel was exhibited at a New York gallery.
Alfred D. Hershey, a Nobel laureate who proved that DNA is the molecule that carries genetic information, died Thursday in Syosset, N.Y. He was 88.
Hershey, shared a Nobel Prize in 1969 with Dr. Salvador E. Luria and Dr. Max Delbruck for their work in the genetic structure of viruses and how they reproduced. Their findings led to new insights into viral diseases.
The three scientists focused on bacteriophages, viruses that infect bacteria, to learn more about the basic nature of heredity.
Cornelius Michael Power, a retired archbishop who led 280,000 Catholics in western Oregon for 12 years, died Thursday in Portland, Ore., of pneumonia. He was 83.
Power took his first assignment in 1939 as assistant pastor of Seattles St. James Cathedral. He went on to serve as Chancellor of the Archdiocese of Seattle and Bishop of Yakima before becoming Archbishop of Portland in 1974. He retired in 1986.
The Rev. Samuel Proctor, once pegged by Ebony magazine as one of Americas foremost black preachers, died Thursday in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, one day after suffering a heart attack. He was 76.
The noted theologian and educator was pastor emeritus of Abyssinian Baptist Church in Harlem and professor emeritus at Rutgers University.
