Iolani's Kimura hits 3 homers in one inning Raiders hit 7 out in a 30-3 rout of Damien
Star-Bulletin staffIolani outfielder Corin Korenaga has a historic dent in the roof of his 1996 Chevy Tahoe today. That's because Danny Kimura cleared the center-field fence but not Korenaga's car with his third home run of the first inning yesterday against Damien.
It is believed to be the first time anyone stroked three homers in one inning of a local prep game.
The third blast was Kimura's ninth round-tripper of the league schedule and broke the Interscholastic League of Honolulu record for home runs in a single season. The record was previously held by Dane Sardinha, Kawika Aganos and Bill Blanchette.
"I saw the ball go over and someone said, 'Hey that's your car,' " Korenaga said. "When he came around, I told him he owes me money - nah. He can come over to look at the dent any time he needs a reminder of this day."
There were seven homers in the 20-run first inning by Iolani (20-1), which sent 23 batters to the plate during the barrage. The Raiders went on to defeat Damien, 30-3.
Junior 'Bows end Raiders' reign
By Pat Bigold
Star-BulletinWhen Iolani's Erin Stovall decides to drive the baseline, be prepared for major impact. The preseason second-team Street&Smith's All-American, who has committed to play for Virginia next year, already plays a physical college-style game.
But that didn't deter University High's Christine Pascua, a University of Hawaii softball recruit.
Pascua played the low post with determination yesterday, scoring nine of her 11 points in the fourth quarter as the Junior 'Bows held off two-time defending state champion Iolani, 41-29.
University High and Kamehameha meet today at 4:30 p.m. at McCabe Gym to determine which team gets the ILH's second berth in next week's state girls' basketball tournament in Hilo.
Stovall (game-high 13 points), who did not start, matched Pascua in fourth-quarter point performance and made some extraordinary moves on both offense and defense. After a steal and break for the basket, Stovall cut the UHS lead to 31-28.
But Pascua hit for a key 3-pointer in the quarter, made strong putbacks and drew timely fouls.
"When she (Stoval) drives, she drives really hard," said Pascua. "So I try to get my position when I know she's going to come down on me.
"All the little ones are kind of scared when she drives and they try to get out of the way. So they put me in there."
"She's a good player but we were able to defend her,"UHS coach TomCostain said of Stovall.
Nikki Drevno also had 11 for University High and Cherilani Melson had 10.
