Evaristo Dela Cruz, who worked in the sugar fields for a dollar a day as one of the first Filipino immigrants to Hawaii, died April 1 in Hilo Hospital.

He was 103.

The Pepeekeo, Hawaii, resident, who worked in the 1920s at the former Pioneer Mill in Lahaina, had received the Oldest Living Sakada Award on Dec. 28, 1991.

Daughter Leonora Sensano explained those recruited in the Philippines to work in Hawaii as her father was were known as sakada.

He was 97 years old when he was presented a plaque by the United Filipino Council of Hawaii for being the Oldest Living Sakada, she said. He had arrived in Hawaii in 1921, working about seven years before returning to the Philippines in 1927.

“At that time, plantation life was hard,” Sensano said. “They worked for a dollar a day from dark in the morning till dark at night.”

After returning to the Philippines, he was a farmer, his daughter said. He returned to Hawaii after Sensano, who was born in Hawaii, moved back and sponsored his return.

Her father returned in 1970, she said.

She described him as tall and strong.

“He used to teach martial arts,” she said, adding that he liked boxing.

He helped heal broken bones by massage techniques, and he knew how to deliver babies -- things he learned in the Philippines, his daughter said.

“He loved people. He loved to talk stories about the past, about his experience, especially when he was working in Lahaina,” she said.

Born in Magsingal, Ilocos Sur, the Philippines, he also is survived by daughters Avelina Agbayani, Agrifina Ignacio and Susana Agbayani; 23 grandchildren; 39 great- grandchildren; and four great- great-grandchildren.
