Hermosura starts tonight

Robby Robinson went from opening the show to closing it.

University of Hawaii head baseball coach Les Murakami said yesterday that Daven Hermosura will replace Robinson in the starting three-man rotation.

Hermosura (1-3, 9.15 ERA) will go in tonight's series opener with fellow Western Athletic Conference member Nevada-Las Vegas. Freshman Dusty Bergman (1-4, 7.96) is scheduled to pitch tomorrow night with Andrew McNally (1-2, 7.17) set for Sunday's finale.

"Andrew had another shot and says he feels fine," Murakami said. "He'll pitch bullpen (today), so we'll know more after that. If he can't go, then we'll have to see who is available.

"As for Robby, we want to make him our closer. He's a senior who deserves a chance to still pitch. He's just struggling right now."

UNLV will counter with Jerimiah Tipton (2-2, 5.33), Mike Zipser (4-4, 5.86) and Tista Perri (3-4, 7.84). The Rebels' top hitters are Ryan Hankins, who is batting .381 with three homers and 30 RBIs, and Ryan Ludwick. The outfielder is hitting .353 with 11 homers, seven doubles, five triples and 46 RBIs.

Hawaii brings a 10-27 overall record and 2-9 league mark into tonight's game at Rainbow Stadium. UNLV is 18-16 overall and 4-7 in WAC action.

The Rainbows must win their last 19 games to have a winning season. Injuries are still a problem, especially behind the plate.

Tonight, Murakami will start Robert Medeiros, who missed Sunday's game against Cal State Northridge with a sore arm. Sophomore catcher Lars Hansen is still bothered by dizzy spells.

Medeiros is batting .322 and is second only to Greg Millichap, who leads UH with a .326 average and in homers with four.
