Silver K. Piliwale liked hiking so much he celebrated his 72nd birthday with a five-day trek through the Koolaus. And again on his 78th birthday.Piliwale paved a trail that was named after him.
Piliwale, 96, died March 5 in Castle Hospital.
He was also a musician, seaman and craftsman. Piliwale also received a Hawaii Living Treasure Award.
Born in Kulaimanu, Hawaii, he is survived by daughters Ethel P. Apao Kiesel, Lorraine L. Piliwale, Joan K.P. Rodrigues and Shirley K.P. Bither; sons George K. and Lui L.A.; 25 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
