Rania worked for Filipinos
as longshoreman chief

Antonio T. Rania, 91, of South Lake Tahoe, Calif., former president of Local 142 of the International Longshoreman’s and Warehouseman’s Union, died Monday in California.

Rania testified at the 1953 Hawaii trial of seven islanders charged with a Communist conspiracy against the United States.

In his 15 years as head of the union, Rania was proud of what the ILWU achieved for Filipinos.

Born in the Philippines, he is survived by daughters Estrellita R. Bennett and Lorenza Altiveros; brothers Francisco and Jose; and sister Maria Lichauco. Memorial service: 10 a.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church of Wahiawa. Jordan J. Abregana, infant son of Jay Abregana and Sabrina Moniz, died March 5 in San Diego. Born in Hilo, Jordan is survived by brothers Stetson Moniz and Jay M. Faith C. Ai Lai, a retired Honolulu educator and community volunteer, died March 3. She volunteered in the Hawaii Education Association, Oahu Retired Teachers Association, Associated Chinese University Women and Hawaii advisory board of the American Lung Association. She also was chairwoman of the policy advisory board on elder affairs of the governor’s Executive Office on Aging. She received the 1989 Mayor’s Award for Outstanding Senior Volunteer and the 1990 Governor’s Award for Outstanding Literacy Volunteer. Born in San Francisco, she is survived by daughter Cynthia Ai; stepdaughters Yvonne Jinbo and Kuulei Goo; seven stepchildren; and 12 step-great-grandchildren. Lawrence “Bully” Akee, 64, of Pearl City, an ironworker, died Feb. 25 at home.
