Mean thief steals
tips for AIDS kids

PRIME candidate for meanest thief in town is the person who stole the tip jar at Old Waialae Road Cafe labeled, "We share our tips with babies with AIDS." The dirty rat also stole the cafe's antique Coca-Cola wagon. Boo, hissssss ...

AS THE Rev. Allan Fisher was conducting the outdoor Koko Kai wedding ceremony of Kathy Fu and Ed Reinhart last Sunday, the bartender loudly popped champagne corks when Fisher spoke. "I heard 'em," said Fisher, who used to be a saloon singer-pianist-comic in Waikiki, starting in the '70s. This being the '90s, St. John manager Patsy Reinhart, ex-wife of the groom, was among the wedding guests. Kathy's kids, Joanna, 23, Jennifer, 20, and Jason, 12, were in the wedding party. A rascal cousin of the Fu kids, Matt Liffick, 8, was kept in check by Jason and witty Darien DeSellem, 22. Music was by Dean Shimabukuro and Dean Lum. There was a struggle to catch the bride's bouquet but Margaret Murchie's muscle paid off. She grabbed the roses and broke free like an All-Pro tight end ...

MELISSA McNAMARA'S hole-in-one Tuesday in the LPGA Super Pro-Am at the Prince course thrilled her teammates, who included Randy Brandt of "Hawaiian Moving" Company and Hilo Hattie's Stan Yamauchi. There were hugs and kisses all around when the ball rolled in the cup on the 127-yard hole. Melissa, using a 7-iron, was hitting dead into a powerful wind. The ace helped her team win the pro-am event and won her a round trip to Tokyo for two on Japan Airlines ...

Courtney steps out

BIG BAND leader Del Courtney told friends at Oahu Country Club Thursday that R. Alex Anderson wrote "Red Opu" for him in 1936 when Courtney was band leader at the Alexander Young Hotel Roof Garden. Del's tummy was very sunburned after beaching, prompting "Andy" to pen the tune. Del had spinal surgery two years ago and has a tough time getting around. But he was determined to make Thursday's dinner, thrown by his dear friend, Realtor Alice Clay of the One Kalakaua senior living project. Courtney's care-giver, Patty Rod, and his physical therapist from Straub, Grant Takiguchi, attended ... Halekulani G.M. Pat Tam had a quiet birthday dinner with friends Thursday at Oahu C.C. Patty is a young-looking 46...

MARY ANNE NAJJAR dedicated her hula, "Makee Ailana," to husband Bill Najjar on his 74th birthday at the Halekulani's "House Without a Key" Wednesday. Mary Anne's hula instructor, Noenoe Zuttermeister, danced "Mi Nei." The women were backed by the always enjoyable trio of Hiram and Casey Olsen and Kalani Fernandes. Halekulani hula dancer Kanoe Miller, easily one of Hawaii's greatest, also charmed the crowd. The Najjars live in Michigan and also have a residence here. Bill gave his 16 dinner guests gifts. Silver dollars dated 1923, Bill's birth year, were given to the men and music boxes that played "Aloha Oe" went to the women. Sparkling jokes by Security Diamond's Berj Bouchakian kept all in laughs ...

A warm, spiritual touch

YESTERDAY was the second anniversary of the Frau's death. Recently, I took my first trip since her passing to golf at Mauna Lani and stayed at Sheraton's Orchid Hotel, formerly the Ritz-Carlton. The hotel was my wife's favorite and I mentioned that to porter Kalima Kaohelaulii. He gave me a lei and said to toss it in the ocean in her memory and say a prayer. Two days later, he gave me a fresh lei and I went to a quiet secluded beach area and threw it in the ocean. It drifted out, and while I was talking to Brita out loud, the head of a little turtle or fish came out of the water next to the lei. Seconds later, a fish came close to shore, jumped out of the water then sped out to sea. The spiritual touch left me feeling very good inside ...
